DIY Scent Detection Tubes (Start Detection Training Without Breaking the Bank)

If you want to get into scent detection, you don't need fancy gear. You need a clean setup, consistent reps, and a way to present odor without turning your whole house into a chemical cloud.

DIY scent detection tubes are cheap, simple, and they actually work. Everything you need is at Home Depot.

If you want the step-by-step walkthrough on how to build them, watch this:

Why tubes matter for detection training

Scent detection is all about clarity. Tubes let you run a clean hunt game:

  • Set up multiple tubes (only one has odor)
  • Dog hunts, finds the hot tube, gets paid
  • The dog learns: only the odor tube = reward

That's it. Simple, repeatable, and the dog figures out what matters fast.

What you need (Home Depot run)

  • (3) 4" 45 degree PVC elbow
  • (3) 4" spigot flange
  • (3) 4" PVC snap in drain
  • 2x10 lumber
  • Screws

That's it. Grab those items and you're ready to build.

How to build them

Watch the video for the exact process, but basically you're building containers that hold odor, vent it, and let you set up a hunt game with multiple tubes where only one gets the dog paid.

Here's the video where I walk through the whole process step-by-step:

Build the tubes, run the hunt game, and you're ready to start teaching detection work the right way.

We're currently working on a full scent detection course that goes way deeper into this. In the meantime, check out more detection videos on our YouTube page:
